Abstract

This review is based on the Term Paper of the Psychology Course at FHO|Uniararas: “O Discurso que enclausura: o lugar que o louco, a loucura e o manicômio ocupa na subjetividade ararense”, developed in 2005 by João Paulo Pitoli. An incendiary provoking work on madness and its modes of treatment, whose theme relates to the conceptions that the population of a city in the inland of São Paulo State, they have about the theme of madness and called "crazy town", based on the question: what was particularly in subjectivity of Araras city in relation to its encounter with the crazy, madness and the formation of a large insane asylum? Pitoli offers us with his work, which fascinates the reader with his writing mode and theme development, generates troublesome, raises questions and reflections on the presented and discussed issues, besides provoking protests and hopes for Ararense people, subjectivity and modes of care free, all these, that did not exist until 2005. The author goes through his experiences, memories and theorists such as Foucault and Marlene Guirado, to reflect on some elements of Ararense subjectivity in relation to mental health. In the discussion and analysis of their interviews, issues were raised such as "dangerous madman," "mad ever seen", "mad as unreasonable... Like an animal? ". The author concludes that the city still has a subjectivity that "imprisons" mad and a look at the madness that does not differ much from decades of speeches ago when the mental hospital was built in the city. That is hy Pitoli´s work (2005) remains of paramount importance, since it is still necessary that these modes of care are introduced, enabling other ways to look at the insane and different.
