Abstract

Verify the students' prior knowledge in relation to a particular content is of utmost importance, because through this knowledge, teacher must develop strategies for the student have a greater advantage in the teaching-learning process. Job found that the level of students' prior knowledge of the ninth year of elementary school to the origin of the oxygen molecule used in the respiration process. For this purpose, a questionnaire on the topic to thirty-three students applied. It was observed by analyzing the results, that most students have difficulty in relating the oxygen used in respiration through the process of photosynthesis. Only one student related oxygen with the water molecule used in photosynthesis but could not explain how it happens. The study shows that students already have knowledge regarding the process of photosynthesis but forty-nine percent of the students could not answer or answered wrongly in relation to the origin of the oxygen in the atmosphere, and also didn´t relate the oxygen atom present in water molecule with the molecule used in breathing.
