Abstract
This work aims to promote reflection on the role of the tutor in distance higher education, which has no specific legislation or specific delimitations. Thus, the tutor follows directions and works in accordance to the determinations of the higher education institutions in which he works. The Distance Education (DE) is responsible for this new method of teaching. Therefore, the question: can the figure of the teacher disappear? The result of this study sought to demonstrate the differences between the roles of teacher and tutor. Equally important, the functions of a teacher and a tutor often blend at the same time they separate, and the ways used in the teaching-learning process can be one of the differences that characterize the functions between one and other, but not only that. The data collected during qualitative research conducted for this study show some differences and some similarities between tutor and teacher.
