Abstract

Popularly known to have a certain peculiarity in its reaction, luminol presents itself as a solid compound that has an extremely complex reaction mechanism. Upon reacting through its required conditions, luminol presents chemiluminescence,
that is, emission of a given amount of energy in the form of light, in the blue coloration. This emission occurs due to the formation of the 3-aminophthalate compound in its excited state. However, there are two ways of obtaining 3-amino-phthalate, which may occur through the decomposition of the endo-peroxide or the α-hydroxyhydroperoxide. However, it was found that the luminol reaction requires a catalyst to occur immediately, and transition metals can be used for this purpose. Consequently, from studies conducted, it was observed that blood can act as a catalyst for this reaction, as it has iron in its composition. From this discovery, the Forensic Police adopted the use of luminol to detect latent blood in crime sites, since this compound has extreme sensitivity and efficiency for this purpose. Thus, the purpose of this literature review is to understand the various mechanisms of luminol reaction, as well as its sensitivity to react in the presence of latent blood.
